Dum-Dum Rails

As I mentioned, to get the appraiser's approval, we needed to have a few things done at the house.  There needed to be a handrail going up the stairs (from the 1st floor to the 2nd floor) and some sort of spindles to keep you from failing off the stairs as they were open on the one side.  At the top of the stairs, we needed some sort of spindles to keep you from failing off the landing area onto the stairs.  We also needed a handrail going into the attic.  Finally, the one section of the balcony railing needed to be put back and the balcony's paint needed "correction".  The sellers agreed to put up the "dummy" railings that they used before, to put the balcony railing back up, and to paint the balcony.

Last night, Aaron and I met the realtor at the house to see what they had done.  We needed to give our approval since the railing repairs were not your typical railings - essentially they are just 2-by-4's.  Of course, I had to take pictures and share!

Note the spindles keeping you from failing off the stairs and the handrail that is on the back wall.

Note the spindles to keep you from falling down the stairs!

The railings certainly aren't pretty to look at, but we don't really care - they won't be around long enough to matter.  I'd like to find a nice way to take care of the opening on the landing but it's not a top priority at the moment...

I didn't take a picture of the railing going into the attic because it was a little too dark.  Also, I didn't bother taking pictures of the balcony - I'm sure you can guess what it looks like to have the railing back up and it doesn't matter what the paint looks like since the balcony is getting replaced entirely anyway!
